I made this shawl on a roadtrip through Colorado a few months ago during an autumn roadtrip through the Rockies and Black Hills. The mountain greenery was starting to change colour and I wanted to make something that reflected what I was seeing around me. This shawl is heavy, warm, and huge. You could belt it and wear is similar to a ruana.
It is made using the corner-to-corner (C2C) method that is becoming very popular online. It is done in the Tunisian Entrelac style, and uses a Basic Eyelet Lace for interest. This is an ideal pattern to make use of leftover yarn.
I used a 10mm hook and 10 skeins of worsted weight yarn, 2 skeins for each colour.
Lace pattern row 1:
Tss2tog, yo across to last stitch. TSS in last stitch. Work regular return pass, being careful not to drop the yo’s.
Lace Pattern row 2:
TSS in vertical bar of tss2tog in row below, full stitch, across to last stitch. TSS in last stitch. Work regular return pass.
Full stitch: pick up a stitch in the hole created any the yo in the row below
First block:
Ch 30.
Flip chain, pick up loops in bottom bumps of 2nd chain from hook and across. 30 loops on hook. Work standard return pass.
Work lace pattern for 30 rows (15 pattern repeats). BO. Break yarn.
Second row of blocks:
First block: Position first square like a diamond. Attach yarn to side edge, ch 30, work second block the same as first, except that at the end of the row, you will join to the side edge. Return pass: YO, pull through 2 loops across.
Last block: Pick up 30 across BO edge of first square. Work lace pattern. BO.
Third row of blocks:
First block: as above
Second block: Pick up stitches along bound off edge of square and join to next square on last stitch. Work lace pattern for 30 rows and BO.
Last block: as above
Work like this for five rows. The colour choices are random. I tried not to have masses of the same colour, otherwise there is no specific colour sequence.
Last row, half triangles:
Pick up stitches along bound off edge of square and join to next square on last stitch. Work lace pattern for 30 rows, but at the beginning of each row, skip the first stitch that would normally be worked. Each row will decrease and instead of forming a square, you will form an inverted triangle that creates a nice straight edge. Weave in all your loose ends.
